The Vegetable Industry's Strategic Investment Plan is now available for comment. You are urged to have your say on recommendations that will guide $60 million of R&D expenditure over the next five years.
Comments are sought from all industry members, supply chain, researchers, retailers and the public. This is a vital opportunity for the Vegetable Industry to have its say on how the R&D levy is spent.
Basically, the focus will shift away from pest and disease and on-farm production issues to growing the demand for Australian vegetables, expanding markets and a better understanding of consumer preferences and expectations.
Summary
“Impact modelling has been use to provide guidance around the spending of the R&D levy in accordance with the strategic priorities, to maximise the impact for the industry.
This modelling, combined with levy payer feedback, proposes the following spending allocation of the R&D levy:
• Consumer Alignment – 45%
• Market & Value Chain Development– 20%
• Business Management – 20%
• In-Field Productivity & Resource Use – 15%
Compared to the past investment of levy funds, the proposed plan will focus on understanding and meeting consumer demands and developing capabilities to expand into new markets.
The industry's strategic focus is intended to, over time, shift away from production and farm input issues.”
