New Varieties on Show

Updated: 15/04/2010

New varieties on show at Carrum Downs

NEW Spinach varieties, Asian greens and a splash of fancy lettuce will be the order of the day at a field day showcasing the latest varietal trials by horticultural seed company Lefroy Valley.

Lefroy Valley will share the field site with fellow seed company Fairbanks Seeds on April 15 and 16 at the property of Peter Lowe, 945 Frankston-Dandenong Road, Carrum Downs.

Lefroy Valley's David Van Wijk said the field display would focus on the salad mix market. Varieties will include the latest European spinach lines and new fancy lettuce lines..

Also on display will be a kaleidoscope of other salad mix products including exciting new chard lines and winter wild rockets that have been specifically selected for their vigour and tolerance to Downy Mildew.

Product development is key to the success of Fairbanks Seeds.

General manager Bruno Tigani said the company would have a full range on display including two of its leading products:

  • Celtic, a baby-leafed lettuce variety which has shown great tolerance to downy mildew
  • Tatsoi Deep Purple, the first coloured Tatsoi released on the market.
"Staging trials with another company gives growers an opportunity to compare our products."
